What is the main takeaway from "The DEIS transparency portal: how individuals can see their data access history"?
A guide for individuals on how to use the DEIS transparency portal to see who has accessed their personal information.
Where can I get help with DEIS or privacy requests?
Businesses sign in at deis.nz with a work email magic link. Individuals use deis.nz/my-data for notifications and formal Privacy Act requests. Contact the DEIS team at deis.nz/contact for support.
Is DEIS a legal adviser?
No. DEIS is a compliance platform that records lookup pathways and evidence. Organisations should confirm legal positions with their counsel or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner where needed.
The DEIS transparency portal gives individuals direct access to information about who has looked up their personal information through the DEIS platform.
Accessing the portal
Go to deis.nz and click "Individuals" in the service switcher.
Enter your email address.
If your email is associated with any DEIS lookups, we send you a secure, one-time magic link.
Click the link to access your portal.
What you will see
The portal shows:
Access history — a list of every business that accessed your information through DEIS, including the date, data source used, and stated purpose.
Your rights — information about your rights under the Privacy Act 2020, including IPP3A (right to be informed), IPP6 (right of access), and IPP7 (right of correction).
What if there are no records?
If no business has accessed your information through DEIS, you will see a message confirming this. Note that DEIS only shows lookups performed through our platform. Businesses may have accessed your information through other channels that are not recorded here.
Privacy of the portal
Your portal link is unique to your email address and expires after use. We do not create an account for you, and we do not store your email address beyond what is needed to match lookups. The portal itself is read-only — you cannot modify any records.
Making a complaint
If you believe a business has accessed your information improperly, you can complain directly to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
